Child Hunger in the World


The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition 2016–2025 call on all countries and stakeholders to act together to end hunger and prevent all forms of malnutrition by 2030. However, given persistent inequality, current trends indicate that the goal of eradicating hunger by 2030 will not be achieved.(FAO,2017) In 2016 the number of chronically undernourished people in the world is estimated to have increased to 815 million, up from 777 million in 2015 although still down from about 900 million in 2000. Globally, the prevalence of stunting fell from 29.5 percent to 22.9 percent between 2005 and 2016, although 155 million children under five years of age across the world still suffer from stunted growth. Wasting affected one in twelve (52 million) of all children under five years of age in 2016, more than half of whom (27.6 million) live in Southern Asia.(FAO,2017) The wasted rate in 2018 in Africa is 7.1%, and the rate in Asia is 9.4%. (UNICEF, 2019)

Africa and Asia show the most serious problem. In 2018, three regions had very high rates of stunting with approximately one third of children affected. They are South Asia, Eastern and Southern Africa, and West and Central Africa. Nearly two out of five stunted children lived in South Asia while another two out of five lived in sub-Saharan Africa. Between 2000 and 2018, although the number of stunted children under 5 worldwide declined from 198 million to 149 million, the number in West and Central Africa has increased from 22.4 million to 28.9 million. In addition, in 2018, more than half of all wasted children lived in South Asia and about one quarter in sub-Saharan Africa, with similar proportions for severely wasted children. (UNICEF,2019) Undernourishment in Asia and Africa is also a huge problem. 243 million undernourished people are living in Africa, and 550 million are living in Asia. Undernourishment rate in Africa is 20.0%, and it is 11.7% in Asia. Caribbean also suffers from undernourishment problem, the rate is 17.7%(FAO, 2017)
